For large premises interested in switching to biomass heating, and want to investigate the significant savings to be made.
The scope of this study is to:
• Carry out a site visit to:
Assess the existing boiler for condition, size and efficiency.
Inspect the distribution and emitter circuits for their suitability for a biomass system.
Determine options for integration of any new biomass boiler with the existing system.
Assess the available space in the existing plant/boiler room for new plant
Consider possible locations for a biomass boiler & fuel storage.
Assess access to the site for fuel delivery.
Consult with the client to clarify their instructions and discuss any additional factors or requirements which may be relevant.
• Analyse available data on heating and cooling loads for the building or site. If this is not available model an energy demand profile using annual energy bills or energy consumption benchmarks.
• Use the energy demand profile to determine the optimum size of the biomass boiler in terms of carbon and energy savings.
• Suggest a suitable boiler size and type.
• Determine the advantages and disadvantages of different fuel types for the particular site and recommend the most favourable.
• Estimate the amount of biomass fuel required on an annual basis. Consider the on-site implications for fuel delivery, handling and storage.
• Carry out a survey of fuel suppliers for the tonnage and type as required by the site. Make an assessment of costs and security of supply.
• Analyse potential barriers to development including local planning, smoke control and emissions restrictions.
• Conduct an economic profile of the project. This will include estimated installation costs, expected Renewable Heat Incentive payments and expected returns after
allowing for biomass fuel and running costs. Simple pay-back periods, IRR and NPVs are also given.
• Estimate the expected CO2 emission savings of the scheme.
• Report on all findings including key risks and potential “show stoppers”. The report identifies whether the site is suitable for biomass, and if so the most suitable plant size and fuel type.
• Give clear recommendations on the next steps.
At all stages the report will identify any major constraints (“show stoppers”) that may affect the proposal.
